Mt Pleasant High Court Hearing Solidarity Gathering

Two retired teachers, Wendy and Tony, and their Upper Hunter environment group, Denman Aberdeen Muswellbrook Scone Healthy Environment Group (DAMSHEG) successfully challenged the expansion of MACH Energy’s Mount Pleasant coal mine on the grounds of local climate impacts in the NSW Court of Appeal.

The company is now appealing that decision in the High Court. This historic case will be heard on 13 May and you can stand in solidarity with Wendy, Tony and DAMSHEG as they continue to protect their community and the land, water and nature of the Upper Hunter.

The highest court in Australia will consider whether the local climate impacts of coal mining on people like Wendy and Tony, their Upper Hunter community and the precious environment must be considered when assessing fossil fuel projects. This is about the Hunter, but the outcome will affect us all.

The Mt Pleasant coal mine case is the first climate change case ever to reach the High Court of Australia.

The Denman Aberdeen Muswellbrook Scone Healthy Environment Group (DAMSHEG) is small but mighty. If they win this case it may set a precedent that will help protect communities across Australia from destructive coal and gas mining.

If the expansion proceeds, Mt Pleasant would become Australia's largest export coal mine, larger than the Adani mine. The expansion would produce an additional 870 million tonnes of CO2, equivalent to double Australia's annual domestic emissions from all sources in 2025, 98% of which would be Scope 3 emissions from coal burned overseas
