Join us for a free film screening and social night hosted by the UNSW Environmental Management Club.
We’ll kick off the evening with a screening of Rising Tide’s new film Turning the Ship, followed by a potluck-style dinner and drinks. Depending on numbers, we’ll continue the night at The Roundhouse for casual catch-ups.
Rising Tide is a national, grassroots movement powered by everyday people passionate about protecting the future. Turning the Ship tells the story of Rising Tide and the extraordinary 2024 People's Blockade of the World's Largest Coal Port at Newcastle, attended by over 7,000 people from across Australia.
After the film, hear from a panel of Rising Tide volunteers about their experience at the People's Blockade last year. Learn more about the 2025 Blockade this November, to build the movement to fight the escalating climate crisis.
Panel:
Protestival of Change: Climate Leadership & the Power of Civil Disobedience
If you care about what’s happening in the world - or if you’re simply curious - Rising Tide offers students an entry-level opportunity to stand up and show up for the people and places you care about. It opens the door to real-world participation and offers a clear and supportive pathway into climate leadership.
What you’ll get from the panel:
- Real student experiences from Rising Tide blockades and action camps
- An understanding of why civil disobedience is used and what it actually involves
- Better understanding where you can find your place in a movement (different roles)
- Legal basics: what’s protected, what’s risky, and how to stay safe
- Clear next steps to get involved with Rising Tide or similar climate movements
Panellists: Liem Grimes (USYD medical student), Neelesh Paravastu (Master of Research in Psychology at Macquarie University), Elena Vallina Aparicio (UNSW Master of Environmental Management graduate), Emma Terry (UNSW Student Representative Council), and Erika Aligno (UNSW Master of Environmental Management student).
