The People’s Blockade
of the world’s largest coal port
Thurs Nov 27 - Tues Dec 2
2025
Overview
~ On the lands and waters of the Awabakal and Worimi Peoples ~
The People’s Blockade is now one of the most iconic climate uprisings in the world.
2025 will be the biggest yet.
As cyclones, floods, droughts and fires become more frequent and intense, ordinary people - just like you - are rising up.
Now is the time.
This November, join with thousands as we stop coal exports from the world’s largest coal port at Muloobinba/Newcastle, on Awabakal and Worimi land and water.
In 2023, a 3,000-strong peaceful flotilla halted coal ships for 32 hours. When 109 people took further action and were arrested, it made global headlines—calling for no new fossil fuels and a fair transition for workers and communities.
Then came 2024: despite repeated government attempts to shut it down, people power prevailed with over 7,000 people mobilising across 10 days and 173 people courageously stopping the ships. With 7,000+ media hits, Rising Tide became a global force in climate resistance.
Now get ready - 2025 will be the biggest and boldest yet. You don’t want to miss it!
The People’s Blockade
Make history as we escalate for the climate
Location
The People’s Blockade is held in Muloobinba/Newcastle and is close to Newcastle city and public transport.
The Protestival is at Camp Shortland and our flotilla launching from adjacent Horseshoe Beach.
Climate Concert is at Camp Shortland.
Protest Camp, where we will sleep (if you decide to camp), eat, plan, prepare, debrief and celebrate, is at adjacent Foreshore Park.
We’re all in this together
The People’s Blockade is a beautiful and colourful family-friendly event, but we must remember: at its core, it is a frontline protest with an important purpose.
The volunteer organisers will work tirelessly to create a memorable, inclusive and safe event - but it’s important to understand that protest camps come with uncertainty, and challenges may be encountered, both before and during the mobilisation, which we will face together. The People’s Blockade is not a festival, where you pay your entry and you’re a consumer - you too are part of this creation!
