Stop the Coal Ships

We call on the Port of Newcastle to stop coal ship movements during the Rising Tide People’s Blockade of the world’s largest coal port, November 29–30.

As climate disasters escalate, coal corporations continue to profit at the expense of people and planet. In Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, the need for a fair transition away from coal is urgent. Yet there is no plan—no timeline, no serious funding, no pathway to secure jobs beyond coal.

The Port of Newcastle exports more coal than any port on Earth, responsible for approximately 1% of global carbon emissions. It cannot keep operating unchecked. It has no social licence to continue business-as-usual while the future goes unplanned.

This November, thousands will gather for the People’s Blockade of the World’s Largest Coal Port. We call for a 78% tax on coal export profits to fund a fast, worker-led transition.

We, the undersigned, demand all coal ship movements pause on November 29–30—to allow safe, powerful protest and to honour the public’s right to demand support for Hunter workers and a safe future for all.

The People’s Blockade 2025 is a line in the sand. The coal era is ending—we demand a plan for the Hunter and a safe planet for everyone.
