Due to current and continuing dredging operations in the South Arm of the Hunter River for Newcastle's third coal loader, all residents and visitors are encouraged to avoid swimming in and consuming fish from the Newcaste Port area. Hazardous contaminants including Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals are known to be present and histurbance of these substances may pose a risk to human and ecosystem health.
