Climate Torch visits Upper Hunter area threatened by coal mining

GetUp is launching the NSW torch in Sydney then it will travel around NSW ending in Canberra Parliament House on September 21. http://www.climatetorch.com/ .
The aim of the Torch Relay is to raise community awareness and grass roots action on Climate Change plus highlight the cultural and environmental significance of the Drip Gorge and Goulburn River area.
Climate Change is of especial relevance for young people and this event will be of educational value for all who attend.
The Torch will be travelling up through Bathurst and arrive at the Drip on Monday 11 am
This leg of the Torch’s travels is being organised by Mudgee District Environment Group www.mdeg.org.au
The event will include:
- A welcome to country by a Wiradjuri representative
- Dance performance by Burralgang Aboriginal Dance Group (a troupe of primary school aged girls from Orange led and trained by a young inspirational Wiradjuri women Fleur Magick)
- Outline of a Bush Tucker project planned for the area.
- Welcome address by Mid Western Councillor James Loneragan.
- A presentation on the environmental and iconic significance of the Drip area and current risk from human impacts including mining.
- A presentation by Nell Schofield on Climate Change - Nell is a media TV and radio presenter, film reviewer and actor and one of Al Gore’s climate change messengers. She will be coming straight from hosting the Live Green Event in Sydney – panel and debate on current green issues and sustainable options for our future.
- Information and display of solar power alternatives including the Climate Change Torch (solar, wind, people & lemon powered) and a new proposal to build a 20MW Solar thermal Plant near Gulgong that is currently being investigated by the Mudgee Environment Group
After ceremony there will be a walk down to the Drip Gorge and a send off for the Climate Change Torch on its next leg down the Hunter to the Gosford.
