Climate change, fish and the fishing industry

The Hunter Community Environment Centre recently met with the Commercial Fishermen's Cooperative to discuss with them the impact of climate change on the fishing industry.

The State Government and a consortium of coal companies are planning to expand the export capacity of Newcastle port by around 70% by building a third coal loading terminal at Kooragang island and linking it to seven massive new open cut coal mines and coal mine expansions in the Valley.

All seven of those mines are owned by the same companies that are proposing to build the new coal terminal.

This will unacceptably increase the Hunter's contribution to global climate change and one of the industries that will feel the effects -- now and into the future -- is the fishing industry.
