SAY NO TO ANVIL HILL AND MOOLARBEN COAL MINES

12pm, Friday 1st June 2007

Outside Governor Macquarie Tower

1 Farrer Place, Sydney

Speakers include: Greens Senator Kerry Nettle and NSW Greens MPs.
Organised by the Greens.

Join the peaceful protest to say enough is enough, to call on the NSW Government to reject two mega mine proposals - Anvil Hill in the Upper Hunter and Moolarben near Mudgee.  Send a message to the Premier that we want real action on climate change – not business as usual. Our letters and submissions have gone unheard so it is time to act.

·         The two mega mines will produce over 23 Million tonnes of coal per year.

·         When burnt this coal will add an extra 59.8 million tonnes of CO2 to the earth’s atmosphere every year.

·         That’s the equivalent of 2.3 times the total CO2 emissions from all transport in NSW each year!

·         It’s equivalent to over 10% of Australia’s annual CO2 emissions.

·         The two mines will each produce coal for 30 years.

It’s criminal!  We have a moral duty to stop the Government from approving these mega coalmines. As the impact of climate change worsens, regional water resources will be stretched.  The Government should be safeguarding our regional water supplies against the 200 litres of water used to produce every 1 tonne of coal.

A large community action will be held in the Hunter Valley on the weekend of 2-3 June 2007 at the site of the proposed Anvil Hill coalmine.

If either Anvil Hill or Moolarben coalmines are approved before 1st June 2007,the Sydney protest will be brought forward and another email will be sent out if that happens.
