The link between the Newcastle earthquake and coalmining - open forum

Event date/time:
23 February 2007 - 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Dr Christian Klose of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Center for Hazards & Risk Research New York USA has published a peer reviewed paper on the link between coal mining and the 1989 Newcastle earthquake. His recent claim that coal and water extraction was responsible for reactivating a major fault under Newcastle and Lake Macquarie which, in turn, caused the 1989 Newcastle Earthquake has been widely reported in Newcastle, the Hunter Region and national media.

Associate Professor Glenn Albrecht of the School of Environmental and Life Sciences is hosting a visit by Dr Klose to The University of Newcastle on Friday 23rd of February.

Dr Klose will be delivering a presentation on his research and its implications at an Open Forum in CT202 from 2.00 – 4.00pm. The presentation will be followed by discussion about the 1989 Newcastle earthquake and questions from the audience.

The research undertaken by Dr Klose has touched on an issue of major importance in academic and public circles at Newcastle. You are invited to be a participant in this important event.
