Secret coal deal exposed - NSW Government obligated to BHP Billiton
The Newcastle Herald broke the story today of the secret deal between the NSW Government and BHP Billiton, giving BHP the exploration licence over the Caroona coal field in the Gunnedah Basin.
BHP payed over $100 million for the deal, which includes an obligation on them to
- plan a new coal fired power station for NSW
- fund the Liverpool Ranges rail tunnel, which will open-up the Gunnedah Basin to the export coal corporations
- build a regional headquarters in NSW
